Our preferred method of visiting the snow is to make the short, easy, non-mountain road trip to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway http://www.pstramway.com/. You buy your ticket at the base station, then you take a 2.5 mile ride up the mountain in a rotating tram car, and at the top you see the picture above: 3o some odd acres of snow covered wilderness just waiting to be explored. There are hiking trails, hills for sledding, and you can rent snowshoes and cross-country skis.
We slipped and slided down the icy trails into a nearby meadow, where Ten figured out the art of the snowball fight rather quickly. She attempted to make a snow angel, but as she's not very heavy, it didn't really make much of a picture. She also attempted to build a snowman, which was alot harder than she expected it be. This caused a fair amout of bitterness and a small meltdown.
We decided to try out the sled I picked up at Sport Chalet. Jeff got this brilliant idea to blaze a trail through 3 ft of snow to try to find our own private hill. Ten insisted on going with him. I wisely stayed on the trail and took photographs of the carnage as they became completely stuck (the pictures are not posted, as I am probably the only one besides Jeff who would find them funny). When they managed to wade back out 30 minutes later, they were freezing & exhausted, and agreed to sled on well used sledding paths.
